Out of 109 candidates, Mattis Sklarz, from the Lyc\u00e9e H\u00f4telier de La Rochelle, takes the title of Best Young Sommelier in this 2026 Proven\u00e7al competition.<\/div>\n<div>From the first theoretical tests to the grand finale held in the heart of Domaine Gassier on June 1st and 2nd, 2026, the candidates put their knowledge, analytical skills, and expertise to the test. A look back at a competition that celebrates sommelier art and Provence wines.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div id=\"model-response-message-contentr_761292a9769509af\" class=\"markdown markdown-main-panel md-content enable-luminous-fast-follows enable-updated-hr-color\" dir=\"ltr\" aria-busy=\"false\" aria-live=\"off\">\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"0\">A grand finale at the foot of the Sainte-Victoire mountain<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"0\">It was at <strong>Ch\u00e2teau Gassier<\/strong>, at the foot of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gassier-provence.fr\/en\/our-terroir\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sainte-Victoire mountain<\/a>, that the final stage of the Challenge took place. The jury was chaired by two prominent figures in gastronomy: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meilleursouvriersdefrance.info\/fiche-mof\/romain-iltis-4770\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Romain Iltis<\/a>, Best Sommelier of France 2012 and Meilleur Ouvrier de France 2015, honorary patron of the competition, and <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.gaultmillau.com\/fr\/people\/mathias-dandine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mathias Dandine<\/a>, Michelin-starred chef at <a href=\"https:\/\/relais-magdeleine.com\/en\/restaurant-mathias-dandine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La Magdeleine<\/a> restaurant. Under their watchful eye, four finalists competed for the title:<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"1\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"1,0,0\">Sarah Niorthe from the Lyc\u00e9e des M\u00e9tiers de l&#8217;H\u00f4tellerie et du Tourisme d&#8217;Occitanie<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"1,0,0\">Avril Heroux from the Lyc\u00e9e Fran\u00e7ois Rabelais IFS<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"1,2,0\">Nathan Julien from the Lyc\u00e9e des M\u00e9tiers Jean-Paul Passedat<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"1,3,0\">Mattis Sklarz from the Lyc\u00e9e H\u00f4telier de La Rochelle<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"2\">From tastings to real-world scenario tests, including technical skills, food and wine pairings, and sales pitch strategies, each candidate demonstrated their rigor, precision, and adaptability. Throughout the events, candidates were evaluated on their knowledge of the local terroirs, appellations, and Proven\u00e7al winemaking heritage. Beyond the competition, the Challenge allows each generation of young sommeliers to deepen their understanding of this iconic vineyard, and to better grasp the diversity of styles, terroirs, and food pairings that drive the reputation of Provence wines today, both in France and internationally.
